World Cup brings the world’s football teams together to compete in a highly charged, colorful and celebration inducing event. Every four years, 32 teams come together in a designated city to compete for the coveted title of World Cup Champion.

As I watch this year’s matches, I remember back to where I was during the 2010 World Cup. My husband and I were lucky enough to spend a few weeks in Mendoza, Argentina during the last Cup and it was an experience I will never forget. Unlike here in the states, the fever pitch surrounding football and the allegiance to which fans rally behind their team is outstanding and contagious.

Layer Cake Wines is lucky to have a phenomenally generous family as partners in Mendoza. The brothers, Feddie and Diego, brought my husband and I into their family and I spent a week getting to know to know a really amazing group of people whom I call friends even now. They fed us incredible food from the parrilla, took us on treks into the Andes with picnics that would blow away even the most avid foodie, and perhaps most importantly, they invited us to watch as their team competed against Mexico and then Germany.

The passion, the volume, the meat, the Malbec, the dancing, did I mention the meat? The entire family participated in the watching of those two matches. It was thrilling. Argentina! Argentina! Argentina! An experience I will never forget.

So World Cup follower or not, grab yourself a glass of Layer Cake (Malbec if you can) and settle in tomorrow to watch Argentina go up against Iran. I’ll be wearing blue and white and chanting in honor of a great sport and a great family.
